Anhydrous aluminum chloride is highly reactive with water and
moisture. Hydrogen chloride gas, a strong lachrymator, is produced
upon exposure of this product to moisture. Anhydrous aluminum
chloride is corrosive toward the skin and eyes. All personnel
must wear protective clothing and safety goggles when working
with this material.
FIRST
AID
First Aid for Eyes -Flush eyes thoroughly with large quantities
of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
First Aid
for Skin -Brush off any solid aluminum chloride before washing
with soap and water or thermal burns will result from the reaction
with water. When flushing with water, use large amounts of water.
If irritation burns develop, seek medical attention.
First Aid
for Inhalation -Remove victim to fresh air. If breathing is
difficult, administer oxygen. If not breathing, perform rescue
breathing. Seek medical attention. Aluminum chloride reacts with
water to form hydrochloric acid which can be corrosive to the
throat and lungs. Treatment should be as appropriate for chemical
or thermal burns to the lungs.
First Aid
for Ingestion -Seek medical attention. Treatment should be
as appropriate for acids. Aluminum chloride reacts with water
in the system to form hydrochloric acid. Chemical and thermal
burns to the mouth, throat, and stomach may occur. Treat as appropriate
for acid burns or thermal burns.
General
Handling Recommendation
Contact with water can result in a violent exothermic reaction
and will generate hydrogen chloride gas. Under no circumstances
should water be added directly to anhydrous aluminum chloride.
Containers are provided with nitrogen padding. Containers should
be fully emptied after opening. Failure to properly safeguard
this material can result in excessive pressure build-up and serious
safety hazards. Vanchlor recommends that all customers properly
engineer their storage and internal transport system to minimize
exposure to air.

details concerning the proper handling and storage of AlCl3
please consult Vanchlor's MSDS.
